Quick answer

What is a Zanskar tour package and what does it include?

A Zanskar tour package is a planned trip to the Zanskar Valley in Ladakh, usually starting from Leh or Manali. It can include stays, a cab with a local driver, sightseeing in Padum, Karsha, Phugtal and Pensi La, and some meals. Each plan is customised to your dates, group size and comfort level.

Key takeaways

  • Most Zanskar tours start from Leh (via Kargil) or Manali (via Shinku La).
  • Plan at least 7 to 10 days so you have time to acclimatise.
  • A package can include stays, cab, driver, some meals and sightseeing.
  • The road season is roughly summer to early autumn; check road status before you go.
  • Stays in Zanskar are simple: homestays, guesthouses and camps.
  • Share your dates and group size for a clear quote.

What is a Zanskar tour package?

A Zanskar tour package is a ready plan for your trip to the Zanskar Valley, with route, stays, cab and sightseeing sorted before you leave home. We change every plan to fit your dates, budget and pace.

Zanskar is a high, remote valley in Ladakh. The main town is Padum. The valley is known for old Buddhist monasteries like Karsha and Phugtal, wide open landscapes, the Drang Drung glacier near Pensi La, and quiet villages where life still follows the seasons.

Because Zanskar is far from big towns, a little planning goes a long way. Fuel stops, mobile network, stays and rest days all need thought. A Zanskar tour package takes care of these details, so you spend your time looking at mountains, not searching for a room at night.

Zanskar Valley: A remote high-altitude valley in Ladakh, with Padum as its main town. It is reached by road from Kargil over Pensi La, or from the Manali side over Shinku La.

With Discover Zanskar, you tell us your dates, the number of people and how you like to travel. We send a day-by-day plan and a clear quote. You can change anything before you book. If you are still choosing a route, read our how to reach Zanskar guide first.

Which Zanskar trip routes can you choose from?

Most travellers enter Zanskar from Leh via Kargil and Pensi La, or from Manali via Shinku La. Many people come in one way and leave the other way, which is called a loop.

Each route has its own feel. The Kargil side passes through the green Suru Valley and gives views of the Nun Kun peaks before you climb to Pensi La. The Manali side crosses Shinku La and passes near Gonbo Rangjon, a striking rock peak, before reaching Kargyak and the upper Zanskar villages.

What does a sample 8-day Zanskar tour package look like?

Here is a sample 8-day plan starting and ending in Leh. It is only a sample; we change the days, stops and stays to fit your group.

  1. 1

Day 1: Arrive in Leh and rest

Land in Leh and rest for the full day. Drink water, eat light food and walk slowly. This first day matters a lot at high altitude.

  2. 2

    Day 2: Easy Leh sightseeing

Short visits to nearby places like Shanti Stupa or Leh Palace. Keep the day easy so your body can adjust.

  3. 3

    Day 3: Leh to Kargil

A long drive on the Srinagar–Leh highway with stops at Lamayuru and other viewpoints. Night stay in Kargil.

  4. 4

Day 4: Kargil to Rangdum through Suru Valley

Drive through green villages with views of the Nun Kun massif. Night stay in Rangdum in a simple guesthouse or camp.

  5. 5

Day 5: Rangdum to Padum via Pensi La

Cross Pensi La and stop at the Drang Drung glacier viewpoint. Reach Padum by evening.

  6. 6

Day 6: Padum, Karsha and Stongdey

Visit Karsha Monastery on the hillside and Stongdey Monastery. Walk around Padum market and nearby villages.

  7. 7

Day 7: Phugtal Monastery day trip

Drive towards the Phugtal trail head and walk to the cave monastery. This walk takes a few hours both ways; go at your own pace.

  8. 8

Day 8: Padum back towards Kargil or onward

Start early to return towards Kargil, or continue on a loop towards Manali if your plan includes it.

Drive times in Zanskar change with road work, landslides and weather. Treat every timing as a rough guide and keep one spare day in your plan.

Where will you stay during a Zanskar tour?

In Zanskar you stay in simple guesthouses, family homestays and camps. Leh and Kargil have more hotel choices, but in Padum and smaller villages stays are basic and clean rather than fancy.

Stay typeWhere you find itWhat to expect
HotelLeh, Kargil, some in PadumPrivate rooms, attached bathrooms, more food choices
GuesthousePadum, Rangdum, main villagesSimple rooms, home-style meals, limited hot water
HomestayVillages across ZanskarStay with a local family, eat what the family cooks
CampRangdum, Padum area, some campsitesTents with beds or sleeping bags, shared or attached toilets

Electricity can be limited in remote places, and hot water may come in buckets. Carry a power bank and warm layers for the night. If you want only camps, see our Zanskar camping package.

Who is a Zanskar tour package good for?

A Zanskar tour suits people who enjoy long drives, quiet places and simple living. It is a good fit for couples, friends groups, families with older kids, photographers and bikers.

Couples

Quiet villages, star-filled nights and slow days. We can add extra rest days and nicer stays where they exist.

Friends groups

A shared cab or tempo traveller keeps costs fair. Good for people who like road trips and short walks.

Families

Best with older kids and healthy elders who handle long drives. We keep driving days shorter where possible.

Bikers

Zanskar is a classic ride. See our separate bike trip plan with backup vehicle options.

Photographers

Monasteries, glaciers and open valleys. We plan stops at the right time of day where we can.

Culture lovers

Old monasteries, village life and local festivals, if your dates match one.

Zanskar may not suit people who need fast internet every day, very small children, or anyone with a health condition that high altitude can make worse. Please talk to your doctor before planning if you have heart, lung or blood pressure problems.

When is the best time to book a Zanskar tour?

The usual road trip season for Zanskar is roughly from early summer to early autumn, when the high passes are open. Exact opening and closing dates change every year with snow, so check the latest road status before you travel.

In early summer you may still see a lot of snow near the passes. Mid-summer brings green fields in the villages. Early autumn is clear and cold, with golden colours and fewer travellers. Winter is very cold and road access is limited; it is the season of the Chadar trek on the frozen river, not of road trips.

Book early if you travel in peak months, because good stays in Padum and Rangdum are few. For a month by month view, read our best time to visit Zanskar guide.

How much does a Zanskar tour package cost?

The cost of a Zanskar tour package depends on the season, number of days, group size, type of vehicle and type of stay. Share your dates and group size, and we will send you a clear quote.

  • Number of days: more days mean more stays and more cab days.
  • Group size: a cab cost shared by more people is lower per person.
  • Vehicle: a sedan, SUV or tempo traveller all cost differently, and some roads need an SUV.
  • Stay type: hotels, guesthouses, homestays and camps are priced differently.
  • Route: a one-way loop (Leh in, Manali out) can add cab return costs.
  • Season: peak months are usually busier and can cost more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are enough for a Zanskar tour?

Plan at least 7 to 10 days for a Zanskar tour starting from Leh or Manali. This gives you one or two rest days to acclimatise, two long drive days to reach Padum, and time to see Karsha, Phugtal and nearby villages. If you want a loop through both Leh and Manali, plan 10 to 12 days with a spare day for roadblocks.

Is Zanskar safe for families with kids and elders?

Zanskar can be fine for families with older kids and healthy elders, but it is a remote high-altitude area with long drives and basic stays. Medical help is limited outside Padum and Kargil. Talk to your doctor before the trip, keep rest days in the plan, and avoid rushing. We can keep driving days shorter for families.

Which is better for a Zanskar trip, starting from Leh or from Manali?

Starting from Leh is easier for most first-timers, because you can fly in and acclimatise in town before driving via Kargil and Pensi La. Starting from Manali suits people driving from Delhi, Chandigarh or Punjab, and the Shinku La road is shorter on the map. Many travellers enter from one side and leave from the other.

Do I need a permit for a Zanskar tour?

Indian travellers usually do not need a special permit for the main Zanskar road trip, but rules for Ladakh change from time to time and some areas near borders have extra rules. Foreign nationals may have different rules. Check the latest official update from the Ladakh administration before your trip, and we will share what we know when we plan.

Is there mobile network and internet in Zanskar?

Mobile network in Zanskar is limited. Padum and a few big villages may have signal on some networks, but long stretches of road have none. Internet can be slow or missing. Tell your family your plan in advance, download offline maps, and do not count on online payments. We share a contact plan before you leave.

Can we customise a Zanskar tour package?

Yes. Every Zanskar tour package we plan is customised. You can add rest days, change stays, choose camps, add a short trek to Phugtal, or combine Zanskar with Leh, Nubra or Kashmir. Share your dates, group size and what you enjoy, and we will send a plan and a clear quote that you can change before booking.

What type of vehicle is best for a Zanskar trip?

An SUV with good ground clearance is the safest choice for Zanskar, because some road stretches are rough, have water crossings or loose gravel. For bigger groups, a tempo traveller can work on many parts of the route, but check with us first. The vehicle also depends on your route and the road condition that season.

Can I visit Zanskar in winter by road?

Road travel to Zanskar in winter is very hard and often not possible because heavy snow can close the high passes. Winter is mainly the season for the Chadar trek on the frozen Zanskar river, which needs special preparation. For a regular road trip, plan between early summer and early autumn and check road status before you go.
